Story starters

The boom, seen from a neighbourhood. London's sauna and cold plunge wave is usually reported from East or South London. Pulse is what it looks like in SW15 and SW6: two neighbourhood studios where the crowd is a broad mix of busy professionals, rugby players, runners, cyclists, parents and retirees all looking to slow down, relax, recover and reset

Everyone in the same heat and cold. A Championship rugby squad recovers in the same sauna and ice baths a mums' group uses later that morning, and a members' club, local businesses and busy professionals book guided sessions around heat and cold water immersion. Recovery in London is no longer a young person's habit.

The wellness corner. Within about a hundred metres at the bottom of North End Road there's now a sauna and cold plunge club, an F45, a reformer Pilates studio and a beauty salon. An unfashionable Fulham street has quietly become a complete wellness district, built by independents rather than chains.

Heat, cold and sleep. Pulse's sleep reset and silent sessions sell the least glamorous benefit of sauna culture, and the one with the broadest audience: slowing down and better sleep in a city that doesn't get enough.
